{"id":977,"date":"2015-12-07T18:36:39","date_gmt":"2015-12-08T01:36:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.latenightsw.com\/?p=977"},"modified":"2015-12-20T16:01:59","modified_gmt":"2015-12-20T23:01:59","slug":"on-apps-that-get-acquired","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/markalldritt.com\/?p=977","title":{"rendered":"Re: On Apps that Get Acquired"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On his blog <a href=\"http:\/\/inessential.com\/2015\/12\/07\/on_apps_that_get_acquired\">Innesential<\/a> Brent Simmons makes some good points regarding the today&#8217;s announcement by Dropbox that it is returning some applications.<\/p>\n\n<p>I&#8217;ll add that when deciding to use an application, you need to ask a few questions:<\/p>\n\n<ol>\n<li><p>If the application is free, who is the <strong>real<\/strong> customer (probably not you)?  For instance, Safari is core to Apple&#8217;s business because it makes Macs saleable, but Mailbox is not core to Dropbox.<\/p><\/li>\n<li><p>How do the economics of the application work?  Is the developer charging enough money to sustain themselves and have sufficient resources to improve the product over time?<\/p><\/li>\n<li><p>How hard is it to transition your data to an alternative application should the one you are using be withdrawn?<\/p><\/li>\n<li><p>Does the developer have a history you can look at (Omni: yes, Bare Bones Software: yes, Apple: yes, Google: yes).
